Unitrends | Server Licensing | SQL Express

I am running Unitrends UEB for a small number of large severs and a mess of workstations.

Because my overall size is large I chose per server licensing, but have some workstations with SQL Express and small databases. I obviously don't want to pay ~$1000 to backup these databases.

As I observe, in all cases, the MDF / LDF files are present in the file level restore.
I presume the file level backup would not be truncating the transaction logs and what not.

But minus a few transactions it looks like file level only will provide some degree of database protection. These backups would occur no more than once a day anyways.

Can anyone confirm / provide details on how this works?
Can anyone provide details of what the extra SQL license or specific SQL backup does?
